Building Your First AR-15: Parts, Budget, and Where Not to Cut Corners

What the parts are, which ones deserve your money, and the honest answer on whether building your first rifle actually saves you anything.

The AR-15 is the most modular common rifle in the country, which is why so many people decide their first one should be a build. It is a reasonable instinct. It is also the source of a lot of money spent badly.

This is a parts and budget guide, not an assembly guide. The goal is that you walk into the decision knowing what each group of components does, which ones actually change how the rifle shoots, and which ones are jewelry. Where the work gets technical, the right answer is a competent gunsmith or armorer, and we will say so.

Check the law before you buy parts, not after. Whether a given configuration is lawful depends on federal, state, and local rules, those rules differ from place to place, and they change. Confirm that the rifle you intend to end up with is legal where you live before any money moves. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is the federal authority, the Arizona Department of Public Safety is the starting point for Arizona questions, and an attorney licensed in your state is the only person who can advise you on your own situation. Build or buy: the honest answer

Building a first rifle almost never saves money. Manufacturers buy barrels, bolts, and receivers by the pallet and assemble them on fixtures, so a complete rifle from a serious maker usually undercuts the same specification assembled one part at a time from retail.

What building actually buys you is two things, and both of them are worth something:

  • Exactly the configuration you want. Barrel length, gas system, trigger, handguard, and stock chosen deliberately instead of accepted as a package. If you already know what you want and no factory rifle has it, that is a real reason.
  • An understanding of the platform. Someone who has assembled a rifle knows what a bolt carrier group does because they have handled one, and that pays off whenever something goes wrong.

If your reason is neither of those, buy a complete rifle from a maker with a warranty and spend the difference on an optic, a light, and ammunition. That is not a consolation prize. That is the better rifle for most people.

Safe handling comes first, and it is not a formality

Before any of the rest of this matters: keep ammunition out of the room where you are working. Not on the far end of the bench. Out. Verify the firearm is unloaded physically and visually every time you pick it up, including after a break, and keep the muzzle pointed somewhere that would absorb a round if you were wrong. The overwhelming majority of workbench accidents come from a live round that nobody expected to be there.

The major component groups

At a high level, an AR-15 is two halves and a handful of subsystems inside them.

  • The lower receiver. The serialized part. In legal terms this is the firearm, and it transfers through a licensed dealer with the same background check as a complete rifle. Everything else on this list is parts. The lower houses the fire control group, the safety selector, the magazine well, and the buffer assembly.
  • The buffer system. Receiver extension, buffer, and spring. It controls how the bolt carrier travels and how the rifle feels when it cycles.
  • The upper receiver. The working half. It carries the barrel, the gas system, the handguard, the bolt carrier group, and the charging handle.
  • The barrel. Length, profile, chambering, twist rate, and the gas port that runs the whole system. More on this below, because it decides more about the rifle than anything else you will buy.
  • The bolt carrier group. The part that unlocks, extracts, ejects, and feeds. It is the highest wear assembly in the rifle and the one most likely to strand you.
  • The trigger. The interface between your intent and the shot. It does not make the rifle more accurate. It makes you more accurate, which is the same thing in practice.
  • The handguard. Holds the rifle, mounts a light and a sling, and either touches the barrel or does not. A free floated handguard does not, which is generally better for consistency.
  • Furniture. Stock, grip, and the small controls. Comfort and ergonomics. Genuinely a matter of preference.

Where the money genuinely matters

Four line items. Spend here.

  • The barrel. Accuracy, service life, and reliability all trace back to it. A properly chambered barrel from a known maker, with a chambering and twist rate matched to the ammunition you intend to shoot, is the single most consequential purchase in the build.
  • The bolt carrier group. You want proper materials, correct heat treatment, and a bolt that has been inspected rather than assumed. This is the classic place people save eighty dollars and then replace the part anyway.
  • The trigger. A good mil spec trigger is fine and a good aftermarket trigger is better. Either beats the gritty budget unit that came in a bargain parts kit.
  • The optic and the mount. The most commonly underfunded part of any rifle. A rifle you cannot aim precisely is not a precise rifle, and a good optic in a bad mount is a bad optic. Read red dot vs LPVO before you choose, then browse optics and mounts together rather than separately.

Where it genuinely does not

  • Cosmetic furniture. A hundred dollar grip does not shoot better than a twenty dollar grip. Buy the shape your hand likes.
  • Exotic finishes and coatings. Colored anodizing, decorative cerakote, and titanium hardware are aesthetics. Nothing wrong with aesthetics. Just fund them last.
  • Billet receivers. A forged receiver from a reputable maker is entirely adequate for a first rifle.

Barrel length and gas system are a matched pair

This is the part most first builds get wrong. The gas system length is the distance from the chamber to the gas port, and it determines the timing of the whole action. Too short a system for the barrel and the rifle is over gassed: harsh recoil, hard extraction, accelerated wear. Too long and it is under gassed: short stroking, failures to lock back.

In general terms, and manufacturers vary, a 16 inch barrel is commonly paired with a mid length gas system, and an 18 inch barrel is commonly paired with a rifle length system. Shorter barrels move down the ladder accordingly. The practical advice for a first build is simple: buy a barrel from a maker that publishes the gas system it is cut for, and do not mix and match to save money. An adjustable gas block can tune a system that is close, but it cannot rescue a pairing that is wrong.

Barrel length also intersects with regulation. Configurations below certain federal length thresholds, and combinations of short barrels with certain stocks, fall into separately regulated categories with their own requirements. That is a legal question rather than a parts question and it is outside the scope of this article. Verify it with the ATF and an attorney before you buy anything in that territory.

A realistic budget, including the parts people forget

The rifle is roughly half of what you are about to spend. Here is the shape of a realistic first build budget, in approximate current market terms:

  • Parts set for the rifle itself: upper, lower, barrel, bolt carrier group, trigger, handguard, buffer system, and furniture. Call it eight hundred to twelve hundred dollars for parts that are worth owning.
  • Optic and mount: three hundred to seven hundred, and the mount is not the place to economize.
  • Weapon light: one hundred fifty to three hundred fifty, with the mount included in that.
  • Sling: fifty to seventy dollars, and it is one of the highest value items on the list.
  • Magazines: ten of them, from one known maker, so you can retire any that give you trouble.
  • Ammunition to prove it works: several hundred rounds, minimum, of what you actually intend to shoot. This is not optional. An unproven rifle is a project, not a tool.

If the numbers only stretch to the rifle, build a less expensive rifle. Parts and small components live in parts if you are pricing out the list.

Tools, and the jobs worth handing to a gunsmith

A few tools matter enough to mention. A calibrated torque wrench that reads in the range the fasteners actually call for, because guessing at torque is how optics move and barrel nuts loosen. Proper vise blocks so you clamp the receiver rather than deform it.

Some work is genuinely worth paying for. Barrel installation and gas block alignment, muzzle device timing, castle nut staking, and anything involving headspace all reward experience and specialized gauges. Headspace in particular is a gunsmith question: if you are combining a bolt and a barrel that did not ship together, have someone qualified check it rather than assuming it is fine.

There is no shame in buying a complete upper receiver assembled by someone who does it every day and putting your effort into the lower.

Function check first, then earn your trust in it

Before a finished rifle goes anywhere near live ammunition, it gets a function check with the firearm verified empty: safety selector operates correctly in both positions, the trigger resets, the bolt locks back on an empty magazine, the charging handle and forward assist work, and magazines seat and drop cleanly.

Then it gets proved. The first range session is a diagnostic session. Shoot in small increments, watch how brass ejects, watch for short stroking or failures to lock back, and stop at the first sign of anything unusual instead of shooting through it. Several hundred rounds without a stoppage, with the ammunition you intend to use, is a reasonable bar before you rely on the rifle.

The short version

Building rarely saves money. It buys configuration and understanding. Spend on the barrel, the bolt carrier group, the trigger, and the optic and mount. Save on furniture and finishes. Match the barrel to its gas system, hand the technical work to a gunsmith if you are unsure, verify the law for your configuration first, and prove the rifle with real ammunition before you trust it.
